3.1.1 Petrophysical Interpretation

Birch Grove No.1 - Petrophysical Interpretation

The Birch Grove No.1 well was logged in one run on May 16, 1968.  Well operations were suspended from March 26, 1968 until May 11, 1968 due to road bans.  After recommencing operations, the hole was conditioned and prepared for logging.  The well was in very poor condition for logging operations, having sat open for 46 days.

Lane Wells ran four logs in this well: Induction, Compensated Acoustilog, Densilog and Diplog.  Poor hole conditions from surface to 1195 mMD (3928 ft.) resulted in poor acquisition of density and sonic data, especially in shaley sections of the well.  Some of the more competent sands within the lower Pennsylvanian Silver Mines Formation did not wash out as severely as the upper sections; reasonable data was collected over these intervals.  The well bore was in reasonable shape from 1195 mMD to total depth and all logs were of good quality over this section of the well.

Shale volume for this well was calculated from the gamma ray curve, using 20 API as a clean sand value and 90 API as a shale value.  Porosity values were calculated from the bulk density curve, using a grain density of 2650 kg/m3.  Potential pay zones were identified using the following cut-offs:

  • VSh < 0.40
  • Phie >0.06
  • Sw <0.70

No hydrocarbon-bearing zones are present within the Birch Grove No. 1 well.  Pay flags identified within each formation are a product of elevated porosity due to the magnitude of the break out within the well bore.
